Vintage Rajasthani Nagla
One of a kind unique jewelry traditions like these are very rare to come by!
These memorable Nagla earrings are worn by Gujjar women of Western Rajasthan. What is an interesting twist to the design is that when a woman receives a pair of Nagla earrings for the first few years she wears them she will dip 2 small balls of cotton in rose oil and stuff them in the hollow vessel of the earring - turning this beautiful design into an oil diffuser! However, because the Gujjar women who typically wear this design work in the fields, over time the earring becomes packed with dirt.
As Nakarali is deeply invested in the tribal, nomadic and rural culture of Rajasthan, we spent many years collecting old Nagla pieces from village silver shops - saving them from being melted down for raw silver. Until one day we found a village silversmith who still had the mold to make these designs in high quality silver. These earrings are contemporary - traditional: made brand new just for you! We love supporting rural craftspeople and perpetuating disappearing traditions.
Due to the design a stretched ear piercing is required to ear this design. Approximately 4 gauge / 5mm or larger.
